Research
The Department of Language Studies is a vibrant research environment that houses interdisciplinary projects as well as projects within the various disciplines.
Some of the projects carried out are Cyber-Echoes, the research programme Foreign North and the Swedish etymological database project. There is also research connected to Northern Studies and Gender Studies, two of the prioritized research environments at Umeå University. Several researchers and Ph D students are involved in the emerging research environment Information Technology in the Humanities.
The main research areas in the department are linguistics, literature and language teaching and learning in modern languages, Finnish, Sami, Swedish and Swedish as a foreign language. Postcolonial studies, gender theory, literacy research and research into digital literature are some of the exciting fields and perspectives that can be noted.
