Many international students at Umeå University come into contact with the Department of Language Studies through our language proficiency courses in Swedish and English, but there is much more to discover in the wide range of degrees and courses we offer.
First cycle (BA) studies generally employ Swedish as language of instruction, and thus require a high level of Swedish language proficiency. However, there are exceptions and some of our first-cycle courses are well suited for international students in language subjects. If you are looking for suitable courses please contact our international liaison officer or our student counsellor.
In second cycle (MA) studies, all degrees except Scandinavian Studies are taught in English and/or the target language. Read about our Master’s programme in Language and Literature by clicking the menu on the left. Our linguists are involved in the Master Programme in Cognitive Science, taught entirely in English, which you can read about here.
For third cycle (PhD) studies, English is widely used as the language of instruction and communication, along with other language(s) which are used internationally in the relevant study field. We recruit globally for all our PhD positions and our current doctoral students hail from twelve countries across five continents.
